Trebuchet
There are many types of siege weapons such as the trebuchet and the ballista. These weapons were usually built at the siege location, for they were not very mobile and expensive to make. However, they were essential to winning sieges.
Interesting facts
- The first catapult was invented around 400BC in a Greek town called Syracus
- The first catapult, called 'The Gastraphete', closely resembled a crossbow
- Soldiers who operated the trebuchet were called Gynours
- The term catapult is derived from 2 Greek words, "kata" and "pultos". "Kata" means "downwards" and "pultos" means a small circular shield that is carried into battle.
